"AGE"

These are always a guesstimate based on their teeth. We are not able to age every horse and these are always a guesstimate.

"AGED"

Anywhere from 20+ years old

Unless a horse has papers we age them on their teeth, IF WE CAN.... please see the below diagram

"HANDS"

A horses height measurement--- These are ALWAYS a guess unless stated otherwise on the listing.

A "Hand" is a unit of measure equal to 4 inches, used to measure the height of a horse at the highest point of the withers. The number of whole hands is properly followed by a period, then the remaining height in inches. This is a really great article for additional information.

"UNHANDLED/UNTRAINED/NOT BROKE"

Never touched or handled, NOT halter broke, NOT able to catch or touch in most cases. We basically have no information on these horses.

"BROODMARE"

A mare used at a breeding farm to produce babies. MOST of the time these horses are only halter broke, usually not even that. They may have had some training in their lives but we ALWAYS assume their has been no training.

"BROKE"

If a horse is listed as broke, we have been told (but not evaluated them) that they are broke to ride. We do not know how broke, what training they have, if they are spooky, dangerous or otherwise. We only use this term if we have not been able to do an evaluation and are going strictly off the information provided by the feedlot owner.

"GREEN"

VERY LITTLE saddle training. Able to saddle and get on but will need substantial training and will require an experience horse person/trainer.

"NEEDS LEGGED UP"

Is broke but has most likely not been ridden for quite sometime. Training is "rusty" and will need time with a trainer or experienced horse person to get back in the swing of things.

"OFF/LAME"

Does not move normally. Maybe temporarily or permanently injured. Possibility of future ridability is unknown. We will try to describe what we notice to the best of our ability but this should never be construed as a diagnosis of any kind.

"SAFE/QUIET"

Very steady and did exactly what we asked and offered no opinion of their own, does not mean it is necessarily trained to show, work in an arena , give lessons or neck rein, just rode very nice and quiet.

"DEAD BROKE"

Trained, knows how to Walk, Trot, Canter with no significant issues...neck or straight reins...we will always put down any observable characteristics we see when riding out a horse.

"RUDE"

Very pushy on the ground with no idea about personal space.

"FORWARD/HOT"

A lot of motion going forward, fast walker, eager to cover ground, an excitable temperament, THINK A HORSE THAT JUST ALWAYS WANTS TO GO.

"EXPERIENCED HOME"

Someone who knows about problem horses, has dealt and can handle the issues. We will rarely put up a horse with serious behavioral issues as these are the rules of the feedlot owner however, if we do we will let you know to what extent that is.

"TATOO'D/PAPERED/BRANDED"

Some horse registries have an identifying marker placed on the horse. It will be either a tattoo (on the inside of the upper lip), a freezebrand on the neck or a brand on any other part of the horse. The horse is NOT SOLD AS REGISTERED UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED. In some instances you can use these markers to do additional research into your horse's past. Some registries...AQHA, for example, allow you to send in a DNA sample to search for them in the registry. A simple Google search can help lead you on the right path to doing additional research. We will research a horse as much as we possibly can but please remember that it is not possible to do this for every horse.
